How to Fix Positively Switched Headlights on an N70 Hilux

Alright, listen up, Hilux owners! So you've got yourself some new headlights,  feeling like an absolute legend. The next minute you realise your Hi-Beam icon on the dash won't turn off and your high beams are on when they should only be low beam. No big deal, just means your Hilux is one of the few that is positively switched.

The Problem:

If you turn on your low beams, the high beams come on, not ideal (we know). This is due to a positively switched wiring setup in your Hilux, which only affects about 3% of Hilux vehicles.

But the good news? It’s an easy fix, and we're gonna talk you through it and get that fixed.

Gear You'll Need:

☑️ Sharp knife (Stanley knife, something like that)

☑️ Wire cutters or clippers

☑️ Electrical tape (the good stuff)

Let's Get Stuck In:

Step 1: Get at the Lights

☑️ Pop the hood.

☑️ Find the back of the headlights.

☑️Twist those covers off, anti-clockwise.

Step 2: Spot the Wires

☑️ Inside, you'll see three wires: white, blue, and black.

☑️ The blue and white ones are joined with some heat shrink, about five inches long.

Step 3: Cut the Heat Shrink

☑️ Carefully slice a three-inch slit down the middle of that heat shrink.

☑️ Peel it open, easy does it.

Step 4: Yank the Resistor

☑️ See that little resistor? Snip it where it's soldered to the wires, but don't cut the wires themselves.

☑️ Get that resistor outta there.

Step 5: Tape It Up

☑️ Close the heat shrink back up.

☑️ Wrap it tight with electrical tape, nice and secure.

💥Boom, Done!

This should fix your headlight issue and your low and high beams work as they should.
